Find it rather good that almost nobody is reading this now. Liberating sometimes to find that you can say alot of things without someone judging you.
Talking about judging, I kind of immediately thought of the recent Dance Inspiration production, UNI 2011.
In terms of choreography, I got to say that the end product is, as usual, very different from what I had set out to do. But this is ok, because my dancers are not people whom I have worked with previously, are people who are not used to each other. item-wise, I seriously don’t care what the people in the studio thought of it. And I seriously cannot be bothered when people keep telling me the item is too dark to be video-ed. Why do I need my item to be video-ed? I did not choreograph something for the sake of being video-ed or rmbed many years down the road. Why? Because with all the videoing done in the previous few years, I never got a copy of the video. So the point about archiving and portfolio-ing is void. Not that I not receptive to comments ok!
I am not very experienced in choreography and so it would be scary if my choreo turned out to be too good, right? I am at such a stage where I still can do experimental stuff. Not that I can’t do those in future, just that I can do it now with less judging and a little more courage. Perhaps 10 years down the road, I would have lost the balls to say ‘who cares what the audience think!!’. At least in my own view, it is a move from UNI 2007, much more movements, a little too much dance. Choreography perhaps is like playing the violin. the more you spend time at it, the more you do it, the better you become, the more you understand the ever-changing audience.
My only concern was the dancers. Would they mind being shrouded in darkness? KH was perpetually complaining that it was too dark towards the perf dates, the last person whom I want to hear the complain from actually. Some people came over and complimented the item but I brushed them off, because they are my friends and to a certain level, they are rather obliged to say tt. So dun bother asking me if the perf is nice next time. I will always say it is, because my friends are inside. If any of my dancers felt that they were short-changed because they cannot really be seen, I am really really apologetic about it (hence the treat!). It is really not as dark as you all think.
Production-wise, like all other productions we have done, there will always be endless hiccups, bumps, unhappiness, grumbles and people who wants to claim credit. Lets move on from this experience and tell ourselves that when the time comes, the most crucial thing is to put aside all the unhappiness, trash out the issues like matured people. GET THINGS DONE FIRST. Nobody can do a show by himself and no teachers are flawless. Accept that and learn from it.
Hopefully, more new blood volunteer to produce the next series. God knows when but I am certain it will come and I hope the team will be brand new in terms of planning.
See, point proven. There will always be endless grumbles.
